According to surveys, around 56,000 babies are born to teenage mothers in the UK every year. Britain has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in western Europe – and the second-highest in the world after the US. According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, there were 42,918 conceptions among under-18s, 8,196 conceptions among under 16 and 380 among under-14s in 2007. Handan Erek photographed teenage mothers during and after their pregnancies, capturing moments of their daily joys and struggles and finding out about their aspirations and future plans.
